Briton Tao Geoghegan Hart missed on his first stage win in a Grand Tour for the second day in a row because he came second on point 16 of the Vuelta a Espana.
Dane Jakob Fuglsang won the stage by 22 minutes from Geoghegan Hart – who came – as his overall race lead was extended by Primoz Roglic.
On a single day the peloton let the breakaway a significant advantage, Roglic finished in 16th but added 23 seconds to his lead over world champion Alejandro Valverde.
Heading the 18km’category’ climb, Valverde was unable to respond when Tadej Pogacar and Miguel Angel Lopez assaulted.
Roglic bridged over to the group and they pulled away to complete on the exact same time.
Pogacar is less than moment behind second-placed Valverde, using Lopez a 17 seconds back.
Among the biggest movers in the day was 23-year-old Briton James Knox, who finished fourth on the afternoon to climb into 11th place.
Five stages stay before Sunday’s 106.6km trip to Madrid, even though Tuesday is a rest day.
Phase 17 is a flat 219.6 km ride on Wednesday by Aranda de Duero into Guadalajara.
