West Bromwich Albion stayed high in the Championship table after a Hal Robson-Kanu winner at Middlesbrough.
Middlesbrough had the choice of their possibilities in an uneventful first half of George Saville viewing his effort cleared off the line by Kyle Bartley.
However, Robson-Kanu was to set the league leaders at the front, tapping on the ball in.
Along with the Baggies held on to move two points clear from second-placed Leeds.
West Brom had gone into the worldwide break at the peak of the Championship after a performance to defeat Cardiff 4-2 at The Hawthorns.
But they were disjointed using Middlesbrough opening the scoring at the end of a cagey first half, as Sam Johnstone saved Britt Assombalongas header along with Bartley rid Savilles rally.
At the end, Matheus Pereira attempted a spectacular but Darren Randolph was equivalent to it until Johnstone parried a stinging campaign from Jonny Howson as either side improved at the start of the second half.
Boro had a opportunity however the ball crushed above after the cutback of Ashley Fletcher.
And it was West Brom who the left all three points thanks to Robson-Kanu, while Boro fell to 21st.
Middlesbrough manager Jonathan Woodgate told BBC Tees:
We created numerous chances, which we will need to take. That is what it is all about, creating chances and putting the ball in the back of the internet and we didnt do that
They dominated possession but we went toe to toe with a team that will probably go up – theyve got some amazing players but that I thought we played very well. If we make chances like that and perform like that, we are going to be OK.
I cant remember an actual rescue that Darren Randolph had to create in the game. I thought we deserved to win the game, we ran all of them way and that was a functionality miles better than the execution against Birmingham.
West Brom manager Slaven Bilic stated:
It is strain up there. Obviously, it is a pressure that is good. The more you win the closer you will be to the tables top which increases the strain.
Middlesbrough arent confident and what they want is a couple of wins. They are currently battling hard and they gave us a game. That they will take action, if they continue then theyll be out of trouble very shortly and I have no doubt.
Make no mistake, we knew what kind of match we expected and it was the one we did not want. Were prepared for this.
They defended numbers but with much greater quality and quantity of strikes, then sooner or later you may acquire good chances. That is exactly what happened.
